How To Build Our Own Cell Phone Network

The task of running a cellular network has usually been reserved for major carriers. But now an open-source project called OpenBTS is proving that almost anyone can cheaply run a network with parts from a home-supply or auto-supply store.

Pre-Alpha MeeGo Atom Tablet Including AppUp Store.... So Cool

MeeGo is starting to shape ups as you can see in this recent video of the pre-alpha version from the MeeGo demo team. MeeGo 1.0 was recently released last month and that version was the netbook version of MeeGo available to OEMs to download and develop their breed of MeeGo based netbook devices. What you are seeing is this video is a pre-alpha version of the multi-touch tablet version of the OS. As it stands a tablet version of MeeGo is slated for a fall release, so for now we can speculate on what will be there based on this video. There seems to be 2 ways to navigate, by application and by content. The content part is what is first shown in the video and demostrates something we have yet to see in a touch tablet devices. I like to think of it as

More Bars...... iPhone 4 Reception Problems Could be Fixed in iOS 4.0.1

Many reports have come out since the launch of the iPhone 4 the other day saying that the device loses or drops most of the signal when holding the phone in a particular way. This is something we have seen ourselves and simply happens when bridging the gap on the bottom left of the device. The response Apple has provided in the last couple of days ranges from advice to hold your iPhone 4 differently to blaming it on the network carriers side. Rumours are now indicating that the problem could actually be fixed with a software update that could arrive as early as Monday. Around the internet the reports seem to blame it on the construction of the antennae which basically use your body to bridge the gap between the two. This bridging the gap might not be the real cause of the problem and more of a symptom of a problem within the software that handles connectivity to networks.

IPhone 4 Is Not Ready!!! Loses Reception When Antenna Band Is Touched

The problem is being so widely reported that Gizmodo has managed to add 16 videos of the phenomenon, along with many, many user reports. The problem is also repeatable, making it look like a lot more than simple coincidence. One possible answer is in the way the new antenna works. Instead of just picking the strongest signal, the iPhone 4 picks the highest quality signal, the frequency with the least amount of interference. In the current iPhone firmware, this is not yet reflected in the signal display, which still indicates actual strength. Apple has said that this is known bug that it plans to fix. If true, then you shouldn’t actually drop a call, even when your apparent signal-bars drop to zero.
Or perhaps it is all a sinister plot from Apple to sell more of those insulating rubber Bumper cases?

iPhone 4 Teardown

Apple definitely spent time giving the phone a thorough makeover, meticulously changing every little facet. We are happy to splay the fruits of their labor for your enjoyment!
We have confirmed that the iPhone's A4 processor has 512 MB RAM, unlike the iPad's more limited 256 MB. This decision may have been made fairly late in Apple's development cycle, because early leaked prototype phones only had 256 MB.

3-D Without the Glasses? Impresive!

The popularity of 3-D cinema is skyrocketing and 3-D-capable TV sets are heading for our living rooms, but almost every 3-D ready technology still requires that you don a set of special glasses. Microsoft has developed lens which could help change all that. With the ability to keep track of the position of viewers and send separate images directly to each eye, the new prototype display eliminates the need for 3-D glasses. Many tech companies are surfing the 3-D trend and researching better ways to deliver stereoscopic imagery without the need for users to wear glasses. Sharp, for instance, has been researching the field since 2002 and Nintendo (with the new 3DS) and Fujifilm (with its Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W1 display) have entered the realm of glasses-free 3D. However innovative, one limitation of Sharp's (and other companies') approach is that the user needs to stand in a precise spot with respect to the screen in order to experience stereoscopic vision. Microsoft's Applied Research Group, however, goes a step further: the system uses a camera to track each viewer's movements and then sends the light in the appropriate direction, directly to their eyes, even allowing two separate users to experience

Microsoft Debuts Windows Live Messenger for iPhone

Surprising as it may seem, Microsoft is pretty darn good at creating iPhone apps. It’s latest entrant, Windows Live Messenger, became available as a free download in the iTunes App Store on Monday. Although the central premise of the app is to stay on top of your Windows Live network and chat with your buddies, the company has added a few additional features sure to please any Live user. Microsoft has also enabled push notifications, which will alert the user to new IMs when the app is closed. As long as your buddy has connected their Live account to other social networking sites, you will be able to see what they’re sharing on sites like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, among others on the social stream screen which greets users as they load the application. Hotmail access in-application is also provided (you can see it in the screenshot, its the glowing orange icon in the upper right hand corner), although there is no link provided from the bottom menu. That’s a bit of a shame but definitely could be added in a future release. Messenger is the fourth application to be released by Microsoft. The company’s first application was Seadragon Mobile, a Photosynth viewer released in December 2008. This was followed by Microsoft’s Bing search app in March, and then Tag, a reader for its proprietary QR code-like offering in May. I am fairly impressed with the app, and it seems like with each one coming out of Microsoft, the company gets better and better.

iPhone OS 4 Released Today....

Apple's iOS 4 was released today ahead of the launch of the iPhone 4, which becomes available June 24. iPhone users can update to the latest OS via iTunes, but some features will not be available for the iPhone 3G and the update is not available at all for the original iPhone. iOS 4 will not be available on the iPad until this fall. Apple says there are more than 100 new features in iOS 4, but the most notable tweaks include multitasking, with handy controls for switching apps; home screen folders that you can name by category for easy access to similar apps; a unified e-mail in-box so you no longer need to switch among accounts; and many more....

Hi-tech Criminals Aren't Very good at Securing the Tools They Use to Attack Websites

Security experts have found that many of the kits used by cyber criminals are riddled with bugs and vulnerabilities. Exploiting the bugs might mean that the attack tools can be turned against those using them. The bugs found by the researchers could be used to identify who is using the tools and even launch a counter-attack. While some cyber criminals handcraft their own attack tools, many others take advantage of the so-called malware kits that are widely available online. These programs bundle into one convenient package everything the budding cyber criminal needs to get started. In a presentation at the SyScan 2010 security conference in Singapore, Mr Oudot released details of 13 separate unpatched vulnerabilites he found in some of the most popular malware kits used to attack websites. Using the vulnerabilities would allow people to get more information about attackers, perhaps identify them, steal their tools and methods, or even follow the trail back to an attacker's own computer.

Nintendo Could Bring 3D With Wii 2

Nintendo announced the Nintendo 3DS earlier this week. The portable handheld uses a glasses-free 3D effect that allows you to view 3D games whilst on the move. We also hear from Nintendo that they could be introducing 3D in to their next games console, perhaps the Nintendo Wii 2.

WordPress 3.0 Has Arrived!!!

WordPress 3.0 has just arrived on the scene — the thirteenth major release of the popular blogging software. It’s the result of six months of work from a total of 218 different contributors. You can download it now or upgrade from within your WordPress dashboard. What’s new in 3.0? One of the best ways to find out is to try out the new Twenty Ten theme, which shows off many of the release’s (which is also called “Thelonius”) major new features, including custom backgrounds, headers, shortlinks, menus, post types and taxonomies. Thelonius also features a lighter interface, more contextual help options, a boatload of bug fixes, bulk updates and much more. For those of you laboring on the backend, including developers and sysadmins, you might appreciate that MU and WordPress have finally merged. Now you’ll be able to run one or multiple blogs from the same installation. Interestingly, the staff of WordPress/Automattic won’t immediately rush off to start work on WordPress 3.1. Founder Matt Mullenweg said his team will be taking some time to focus on things other than the core product. “Over the next three months,” he wrote this morning, “we’re going to split into ninja/pirate teams focused on different areas of the around-WordPress experience, including the showcase, Codex, forums, profiles, update and compatibility APIs, theme directory, plugin directory, mailing lists, core plugins, wordcamp.org… the possibilities are endless… We think this investment of time will give us a much stronger infrastructure to grow WordPress.org for the many tens of millions of users that will join us during the 3.X release cycle.”

Man Returns iPad Because It's Just Too Awesome....???

At Harvard Business Review, management consultant Peter Bregman writes that he returned his iPad because it was "too good." He was never bored when he had an iPad and his best ideas come to him when he's bored. Seriously.
Here's Peter from HBR:
It didn't take long for me to encounter the dark side of this revolutionary device: it's too good.
It's too easy. Too accessible. Both too fast and too long-lasting. Certainly there are some kinks, but nothing monumental. For the most part, it does everything I could want. Which, as it turns out, is a problem.
So why is this a problem? It sounds like I was super-productive. Every extra minute, I was either producing or consuming.
But something — more than just sleep, though that's critical too — is lost in the busyness. Something too valuable to lose.
Boredom.
Being bored is a precious thing, a state of mind we should pursue. Once boredom sets in, our minds begin to wander, looking for something exciting, something interesting to land on. And that's where creativity arises.
My best ideas come to me when I am unproductive. When I am running but not listening to my iPod. When I am sitting, doing nothing, waiting for someone. When I am lying in bed as my mind wanders before falling to sleep. These "wasted" moments, moments not filled with anything in particular, are vital.

New Xbox Is Here!!!

Microsoft ended its E3 keynote in grand fashion on Monday as it unveiled a completely redesigned Xbox 360. The new model is significantly smaller, quieter and thinner with a 'kink' reminiscent of the X logo. It's now also heavily upgraded with a 250GB hard drive as standard and built-in 802.11n Wi-Fi. Notably, the hard drive is now inside the console rather than in an outside module. Microsoft hasn't said if and how upgrades are possible. The console comes only in black and will be in stores this week for the same $299 as the outgoing 120GB Elite model. The conventional 120GB system will still exist for $199 while the Arcade will drop to $149, though it's not yet confirmed if these are clearouts or permanent options.

Is Retina Display A Lie?

The iPhone 4’s screen may be the best mobile display yet, but its resolution does not exceed the human retina, as Steve Jobs claims. The math just doesn't add up, said Raymond Soneira, president of DisplayMate Technologies, who explained that the iPhone 4's purported "retina display" was a misleading marketing term. "It is reasonably close to being a perfect display, but Steve pushed it a little too far" Soneira said. During his keynote speech, Jobs said the iPhone 4’s display had a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch. He claimed that this resolution exceeds the limit of the human retina, which Jobs said was 300 pixels per inch for a display about a foot away. "It turns out there’s a magic number right around 300 pixels per inch, that when you hold something around to 10 to 12

New MiFi with OLED Display

The MiFi personal hotspot is a great little box, allowing you to share a 3G data connection between several wireless devices. In use, though, it can be something of a pain. You have to log in to the router via a browser just to check battery life, for instance, and the different colored flashing lights are confusing (I can never remember which is which). Huawei has solved all these problems with its new MiFi E585. The personal Wi-Fi hotspot does the same as the old MiFi, only it adds a monochrome OLED display to the mix. This will show you the battery status, connection speed (3G, EDGE, GPRS) and even the amount of data you have used. There is also a browser-based dashboard if you need to get deeper into the settings, but most of what you need is right there. The new router will be available from carrier 3 in the UK for just £50 ($73) on pay-as-you-go plans, and presumably less with a contract. It has not yet appeared on the 3 MiFi page, but the press release says it will be on sale in July.

Microsoft Office Is Now Available As Web Application

Microsoft finally launched the awaited Office web application officially after it tested it through the technical preview it offered to a large group of users over the past few months. It means if you have a Windows live account then you can access Microsoft Office web version on your browser now. You can upload office documents online, create new document, edit it and share with your friends. The storage space needed is provided by Skydrive. It’s 25 GB in total, which should be sufficient for most of us. Obviously, the web version isn’t as feature-rich and effective as the desktop version but if you use Google Docs and miss the web interface of Microsoft Office then you might consider switching to office live. Currently this feature is available only for US, UK, Canada and Ireland visitors. To use this account you should have Windows Live ID. If you don’t belong to these countries then you can access Microsoft Office Web Apps by clicking here (Available in English language only).

ATT Allowed Hackers to Obtain the Email Addresses of iPad Owners

FBI is investigating a security breach of ATT’s website that allowed hackers to obtain the email addresses of iPad owners. ATT acknowledged on Wednesday there had been a data breach at the US telecom giant that allowed hackers to obtain the email addresses of owners of the 3G model of the iPad. According to Silicon Valley website Valleywag, a shadowy hacking group called Goatse Security hacked into the ATT website and obtained the email addresses of over 114,000 iPad owners including those of business leaders, politicians and military officials. Valleywag published the names of some on the list but not their full email addresses. They included New York Times Co. chief executive Janet Robinson, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel. Valleywag owner Gawker Media also runs the popular technology blog Gizmodo, which obtained a secret prototype of an Apple iPhone in April after it was lost in a California bar and published details and pictures of the device.

How The Sun may Affect your Security -- and TV

Scientists are preparing for a 2013 peak in solar activity and its possible effects on Earth -- from power outages to interruptions in GPS and cell service. Solar storms occur when sunspots on our star erupt and spew out flumes of charge particles that can damage power systems. The sun's activity typically follows an 11-year cycle, and it looks to be coming out of a slump and gearing up for an active period. People of the 21st century rely on high-tech systems for the basics of daily life. But smart power grids, GPS navigation, air travel, financial services and emergency radio communications can all be knocked out by intense solar activity.

SNES (HD) Playable with The iPhone

A crafty hack has been made available for the iPad called the SNES HD. The iPad works as the SNES while an iPhone or iPod Touch is the control pad. The SNES HD comes with a few features such as multiplayer for up to four persons and a full screen display. If you combine this to TVOut2 and connect to the TV via the VGA cable, you can play it over the BIG SCREEN. All ROMs will be easily accessible on the left side of the iPad’s screen. It all looks very smooth and responsive. There’s still something to be said about not having physical buttons on a control pad, but this is still very impressive. (ROMs have to be downloaded separately). Video Link
