Tawkon, the smartphone app that claims to measure the amount of radiation emitted from your phone, has taken a look at the so-called "death grip" on Apple's iPhone 4 and determined that it does more than just hurt reception levels - it might be hurting you.

Many reports have come out since the launch of the iPhone 4 the other day saying that the device loses or drops most of the signal when holding the phone in a particular way. This is something we have seen ourselves and simply happens when bridging the gap on the bottom left of the device. The response Apple has provided in the last couple of days ranges from advice to hold your iPhone 4 differently to blaming it on the network carriers side. Rumours are now indicating that the problem could actually be fixed with a software update that could arrive as early as Monday. Around the internet the reports seem to blame it on the construction of the antennae which basically use your body to bridge the gap between the two. This bridging the gap might not be the real cause of the problem and more of a symptom of a problem within the software that handles connectivity to networks.

The problem is being so widely reported that Gizmodo has managed to add 16 videos of the phenomenon, along with many, many user reports. The problem is also repeatable, making it look like a lot more than simple coincidence. One possible answer is in the way the new antenna works. Instead of just picking the strongest signal, the iPhone 4 picks the highest quality signal, the frequency with the least amount of interference. In the current iPhone firmware, this is not yet reflected in the signal display, which still indicates actual strength. Apple has said that this is known bug that it plans to fix. If true, then you shouldn’t actually drop a call, even when your apparent signal-bars drop to zero.Via: Gadget Lab

We have confirmed that the iPhone's A4 processor has 512 MB RAM, unlike the iPad's more limited 256 MB. This decision may have been made fairly late in Apple's development cycle, because early leaked prototype phones only had 256 MB.

Microsoft Debuts Windows Live Messenger for iPhone
Surprising as it may seem, Microsoft is pretty darn good at creating iPhone apps. It’s latest entrant, Windows Live Messenger, became available as a free download in the iTunes App Store on Monday. Although the central premise of the app is to stay on top of your Windows Live network and chat with your buddies, the company has added a few additional features sure to please any Live user. Microsoft has also enabled push notifications, which will alert the user to new IMs when the app is closed. As long as your buddy has connected their Live account to other social networking sites, you will be able to see what they’re sharing on sites like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, among others on the social stream screen which greets users as they load the application. Hotmail access in-application is also provided (you can see it in the screenshot, its the glowing orange icon in the upper right hand corner), although there is no link provided from the bottom menu. That’s a bit of a shame but definitely could be added in a future release. Messenger is the fourth application to be released by Microsoft. The company’s first application was Seadragon Mobile, a Photosynth viewer released in December 2008. This was followed by Microsoft’s Bing search app in March, and then Tag, a reader for its proprietary QR code-like offering in May. I am fairly impressed with the app, and it seems like with each one coming out of Microsoft, the company gets better and better.
iPhone OS 4 Released Today....
Apple's iOS 4 was released today ahead of the launch of the iPhone 4, which becomes available June 24. iPhone users can update to the latest OS via iTunes, but some features will not be available for the iPhone 3G and the update is not available at all for the original iPhone. iOS 4 will not be available on the iPad until this fall. Apple says there are more than 100 new features in iOS 4, but the most notable tweaks include multitasking, with handy controls for switching apps; home screen folders that you can name by category for easy access to similar apps; a unified e-mail in-box so you no longer need to switch among accounts; and many more....Is Retina Display A Lie?
The iPhone 4’s screen may be the best mobile display yet, but its resolution does not exceed the human retina, as Steve Jobs claims. The math just doesn't add up, said Raymond Soneira, president of DisplayMate Technologies, who explained that the iPhone 4's purported "retina display" was a misleading marketing term. "It is reasonably close to being a perfect display, but Steve pushed it a little too far" Soneira said. During his keynote speech, Jobs said the iPhone 4’s display had a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch. He claimed that this resolution exceeds the limit of the human retina, which Jobs said was 300 pixels per inch for a display about a foot away. "It turns out there’s a magic number right around 300 pixels per inch, that when you hold something around to 10 to 12
